I finally ditched my Radeon 9700 Pro and got an MSI TI 4200 128MB 8X. It's running nicely except for a couple things. First off, with my 9700 Pro I had these horizontal lines in some games whenever the 3D stuff went up or down the screen. I switched to the TI 4200 and they're still there, but not as bad.

Another thing about the lines though. I never had them on my GeForce 2 Pro. Well once when I did a format with my 9700 Pro in, the lines were still there. I stuck my GeForce 2 Pro in and then the lines were there. That means somehow the 9700 Pro left the lines for me. I'm guessing that could be the case here also... I might just have to format again :-(

Secondly, my 3D Mark score is a little low for my system I believe. I'm getting 10772 3D Marks, which seems a little low for my system and the card is overclocked to 280 Core 590 Mem. Toms hardware was getting 10600 3D Marks the same card with a 2.2 Pentium 4 system - http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/200210041/nv18_nv28-07.html. BTW, when I uninstalled my ATI drivers and rebooted, I also used Driver Cleaner to get rid of the left over stuff.

Edit: Notice Tom's Hardware only benched the 64 MB versions... I have 128, which should push my card even farther.

And last, I'm getting a little stuttering in some games. Again, could be left over problems from the 9700 Pro that only a format would fix, but I'd rather use that as a last resort.

Any ideas?

couple of things...

the 4200 64mb card's generally have higher clocks than the 128 version.. depending on which one you get.. this will affect the score...

also each system benches different... perhaps you have more bottlenecks in your system than the THG rig :)

concerning the horizontal lines... consider perhaps that it is not the 9700pro that was faulty.. but rather your rig has some hardware conflicts someplace...

it is highly possible...

like I recommended for you before with the r300.. plug your current card in another system if you can and test it.. see if it works... if it does.. boom you have a problem in your rig someplace :)

if not then you will just have to trouble shoot one step at a time..

personally.. as you will already know... perhaps formatting is the best way to go :)

IMO...

First of all i think you should do a reformat, because it's not the card's causing the lines you talk about, cuz you've had the same with all three of em, don't blame the 9700, just reformat, reinstall windows, and then see what happens, about the benchmarks, as you will probably know, standard GF4 Ti4200 64mb versions run at 250 mhz core and 550 mhz memory if i'm correct, on the standard 128mb versions they use 4.0 ns memory @ 444mhz, so a standard 128mb card is naturally slower. Also me and a mate of mine have the same cards:

Point of View GF4 Ti4200 XP Turbo 128MB 3.3ns DDR memory running at 310 mhz core and 660 mhz memory, he's running it on a P4 2.4ghz (as in ure sig, you are overclocking your cpu to a 2.4ghz), he also gets about 10000 3dmarks, that is with the new Gigabyte SinXP mobo, 512 PC3200 ram etc. and a faster card then ure's...so don't worry....for higher scores oc your card or go back to the radeon...

Edit: Damn you beat me at it Sazar...:)

64mb agp4x = 250/500
128mb agp4x = 250/444
128mb agp8x = 250/512

I've got the 128MB 8X card, which is actually faster than the 64MB card. Plus, mine's overclocked to 280/590, which should really up the score.

And G-Lizard, my CPU isn't overclocked. It's a true 2.4 GHz P4..

Gazing into the crystal ball, I see yet another format in my future. ARGH.

Oh I thought that when you say P4 @ 2.4ghz, it usually means that it's oc'ed, else it just says P4 2.4ghz, anyway, me and that friend of mine have the same card, both clocked at 310/660, AGP4x, and he also scores about 10000 3dmarks...its just the way it is...i think you have to accept that score...else try 3dmark03..you should get about 1300-1500 point there, it's independend because the test don't rely on the cpu as much as 3dmark01 does....

Just my 2 cents

I'll take it off your hands how much do want for it ???

j/k

(wot sazar doesn't know about hardware isn't worth knowing )

I only want it so I can ditch my (out of date ) Ti4200

Eh, haven't did it yet. It's not much of a priority to me right now. I'll have to backup over 6 gigs of crap, which is never fun. Then to get everything back like it was takes around 3 hours. After having all those problems with my 9700 pro I lost my "Damn, I've gotta get this fixed NOW!" way of thinking. I'm gonna wait until my 9700 Pro sells and I ship it out and stuff. Then maybe one weekend.... I'll update this thread once I do.

With my 1400 Tbird and my overclocked ti4200 I can get about 11500 3dmarks. I never have been able to figure out how I could beat a 2.4 P4??

thats one of those things... depends on how its built, tweaked and what kit is in it.

I got a much better 3dmark2001 score on my old p3 750mhz with 32mb gf2mx than my mate got on his athlon 1.4ghz with 64mb kyro2

kyro's ain't that bad dood lol...

they had nice ideas... but unfortunately no money to compete with nvidia...

sorry, but they were horrible, for when they came out. :p if those same cards came out a year or two earlier then when they did, then they'd be decent.

though it sure woulda been nice to have 3 major competitors in the graphic card market. (not counting xabre's, either. :p)

Specs are in my sig, I got the Asus 4200 and I managed 13900 in 3dmark01, then again I've clocked it alot higher then you have yours at.

I remember seeing benchmarks at the time showing the kyro getting better scores on stuff than many gf3 cards... shouldnt be too bad then.

plus, theres the faster cpu... with it being athlon also, and the ram being ddr in the athlon etc...

the absolute fastest kyro in futuremark's orb was hitting something like 4400 points. this is with a 2.4ghz amd chip.

to get 4400 with a gf3, you'd need 600mhz. :D

on which 3dmark version though??

3dmark2001 is a bit less pushy compared to the newer ones...

whats the url for that score??

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
