When I play large WMV files, (3G 1920x1080) the video lags for a second every 2 seconds, and the memory usage for the media player goes up to over 1,700,000 K.

This only happens on wmv files. I can play 8G 1020p high resolution mkv and mp4 files with no problem, but can't play hi res wmv files. Any ideas?

Install SP3 for XP or upgrade to windows 7.
Remove K-Lite codec pack

Download either Download Media Player Classic Home Cinema, Free Video Player Download and http://haali.su/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe

or to make life easy for yourself this CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack

turn off any WMV acceleration in your radeon drivers - mpc-hc will hardware decode for you or if using CCCP it will software decode.

hey it friggin worked!

I updated windows, and also replaced my codec pack.
What was the likely solution, SP3 or CCCP instead of K-Lite? Or both?

Most likely disabling hardware WMV in your drivers. Second would be switching to CCCP as K-Lite installs many codecs a large portion of which conflict with each other a lot of the time.
