Default Magic Wand Use

I am trying to follow this tutorial.

http://codenamebender.deviantart.com...plate-97387505

And for some reason, always (i always end up doing a harder way) can't seem to use the Magic Wand. In this tutorial when it says click on "Front" layer with the magic wand, well mine does nothing. I can't seem to get it to work.

Am I missing something?

Well, he selected the magic wand tool, then selected the layer that is the front of the folder. (He actually selected the empty space outside of the front of the folder).

Then he selected the leaf layer that he dragged in and deleted what had been selected by the wand tool from the other layer, which was the empty space from around the front of the folder. This makes the leaf layer over the folder show up.

That is the thing. I have seen many tutorials like this, and needed to do this many times. But it never works. I can never select the layer that way, I can never do it. Do I need to press a button at the same time? Or am I just completely stupid and can't do it. I have been a graphic designer for awhile now, and can't do this simple thing. Arg

No buttons need to be pressed, you just go over and select the layer to change layers.

Finally got it to work. Not sure what I was doing wrong, but glad it's working.
