Athlon XP 1800 384 mb SDRAM Radeon agp 64mb DDR card Windows XP home edition Creative labs SB sound card I can't get my system to run XP when it is at 1.53ghz. I can run it when I downclock my CPU and run the 100/100 setting but not when I run the 133/133 setting. I crashes on the welcome screen or the black screen inbetween the XP screen and the welcome screen. Anyone got any ideas? Saberlight the village idiot! |

I’d say you have an overheating problem. Those Athlon chips run a little hot so never go cheap when it comes to a Heatsink and Fan, also don’ forget your Thermal Compound.
Try an additional intake and exhaust fan and see how it runs then. Mike Tasker |

also check to make sure you have a good ps that is amd approved
then go into your bios and make sure all your power ratings are ok,(5v rail, 12v etc.) if not you might need another ps, but this is just a possibilty you can take a look at! good luck!

since im fixing to buy an athlon xp... is the included heatsink in the boxed cpu going to be sufficient, or is it going to be worth an extra $20 or so to buy a higher grade one?

If your running the default 133/133 then the original (Stock), heatsink should be fine, just pick up a tube of Arctic Silver 3 for a good heat transfer compound. Be sure to visit:
arcticsilver.com for instructions on how to apply (This thing is capacitive, so don't get it all over ...) Sounds to me like your undervolting something or something maybe crapping out. Were going to need your full system specs: Mobo etc. |

I have just upgraded from a P III 500, to an Athlon XP 1700, and was told I had to upgrade my power supply from 250 watt, to a 300 watt.

AMD's need a minimum of 300 watts of power. That is a standard. Ask anyone about it and they will tell you the same. Actually the more watts you got the better for your system.

Another things with AMD's is that you need lots of good cooling in them. Otherwise they will not work properly. I currently have a volcano 5 or maybe 6, lots of heat transfer compond, another two fans in my box, and a good ps that has an intake and exhaust!
Cheers! AJ |

Cooling too much on an XP isn't very necessary, just pickup some case fans for airflow (Remember equal intake and exhaust). AMD requires a minimum of 350 watt (You'll see no less than 350watt is AMD Approved), and that get a good brand (Antec, Enermax [Don't buy if you have an Epox, there are known issues], and Sparkle).
Don't forget, a faulty PSU that dies, may just take the motherboard and other components with it. Yodums |
