Does anyone know what tools or what i would need to do to repair a cut cable line? If you do, or know a site that has the steps, images would help too. thanks.

I assume this is a cable TV type cable, not a cat5 network line. I'd go to a RadiaShack and get a male and a female connector and any tool needed to crimp the connectors you buy. They also sell a screw-on type, so you don't have to buy a tool.

My wife cut the cat5 line running through her closet (good-bye internet). I had to buy connectors for the ten wires inside, but it works fine now.

you will want a hex tool crimper, and a male to male plug to joint the two ends. I don't know if I have ever seen a male terminated cable end, but if Tom says they are there it would'nt hurt to look, then you would'nt need the plug.

doing some research i can be a little more specific, it is a Coaxial cable. i cut some of the seathing back and now have more questions, do i need a special tool to cut down through the other stuff to get to the single wire?

Sharp pocket knife is the only tool you need.

Go to Lowe's, radio schlock etc. Buy two, thread on male coax connectors and one female to female coax coupler. $3-5

Use the knife to cut back the outer insulation as shown on the package from the outer braid. Fold back the braid (or foil in some cases) over the outer insulation. Then cut back the whitish inner insulation away from the wire being carefull not to nick the wire. Screw the male fittings on each end of the wire. Screw the male fittings into the female coupler. If it's out doors wrap it with tape or smear it with rtv silicone to keep moisture out.

If the cable ends up too short get a foot of coax and 2 female couplers and 4 male fittings. Same process.

The screw on fittings cost the same as the crimp type, require no tools and actually make a more reliable conenction.

WARNING: Coax comes in multiple sizes as do the connectors RG56 satellite, 58 short distance, 59 longer distance, etc. Get the right one or the cable won't fit properly into the connectors. This is critical because it affects signal quality and strength. Taking an inch of cable with you will help.

Maybe this will help.

And here's a page that shows step by step installation with crimping tool.

This page is text only, but helpful.

Yeah, what I said. Pocket knife and look at the back of the connector package.

thanks guys, i followed your advice tom, went to radioshack and got a screw on adapter and a basic wire cutter. its working fine, i love you guys.

OOOHHHH MY GAWWWDDD ....

I would seriously hope that none of you are ACTUALLY using a "knife" to strip "59" cable and using "Twist on" fittings ......

FFfffffffwwwwweeewwww, and your modem WORKS ? Wow.

As a Service Tech for a cable company i ask that you don't ever use the twist on fittings from anywhere. go to home depot, menards, or lowes and get the snap and seal fittings and a good wire stripper and tool for crimping snap and seal fittings. The other thing you can do is call your cable company to have them fix it.

Venom are you seeing something were not? this was asked today

Well, at least they tried. That is more than I can say for some people. But, with that said, let me explain how to knock out return service on the particular tap leg of the LE that the modem/house is hooked to:

Always use 59 line, as pictured above.
Strip it with a utility knife, as pictured above. (<-APA)
Make sure the center dielctric is the clear plastic, not white foam. (APA)
Don't worry about cutting nicking or scraping the center conductor.
Make sure to leave '''plenty''' of center conductor length, (APA)
Always use copper braid, single shield wire (APA) , &
Always remove the foil ......
Place a small 'twist' or bend on the end of the wire, to Hook into place...
Be sure to use twist-on fittings on both ends,
Ohh ohh ohh yeah, and dont forget to leave the AFRO PUFF hanging out the back (APA) :)
Hook all this up either directly into your service line, or with 4-way splitters.

You are SURE to knock out the service for you AND your neighbor.
Good luck !

Hey, I'm just kidding around, but seriously, call the cable company, or take EJN74's advice, or dont splice the cable at all. Buy a new RG6 cable. Once you spend $5 at Radio Shack, it will stop working in a few weeks. THEN, you are going to spend $15 for a service call (Or new outlet) when the cable company comes out, not to mention to time you had to wait for them between 11 and 2.... When you could have resolved the issue by buying the correct RG6 cable. Ask a satellite installer for a cable :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
