I think mine is a little dated for such a funky upgrade.
Is the media itself widely available? |

Dual Layer media? I think at the moment it would be cheaper to buy the movie.

I won't pay more than A$20 for a movie. I can wait......& wait........& wait.
![]() It pays to shop around though. Go into one shop & it costs $40, go into another shop in the same centre & it is under $20.

nice find! flashed the firmware on my Lite-On in hopes that the DL media will soon drop in price... there was an added bonus though... now my DVD +/- RW drive will now burn CD-Rs at 40x speeds in stead of the old 24x speeds that it was rated at.

Yeah, people have been flashing the dvdr drives for a while now. All the way back to 2.4x drives. Lite-ons are notoriously good for this. Also, alot of "off-market" brands can be had cheap and then flashed to their major brand counterparts.

Has anyone here performed the firmware upgrade with the Lite-On 451S and had it work? i'd like to do it, but am kinda skeptical about it, mostly due to the fact that i'd rather NOT turn my DVD+/-RW into a fancy paperweight.

Checked at Computer fair in UK this weekend and Verbatim are the only producers of these double layer discs, through one of their companies that pioneered the DVR9 .
They are said to be so unreliable at present as to be not worth wasting money on ! |

Just cross flashed my SOHW-1633S to the new SOHW-1653S plus a lot of media updates for faster writing. Must go & read up on the new drive to see if it was worth it.

if i cross flash the firmware on my LDW 451S to the SOHW 832S, would that also make my DVD burner capable of burning at 8x instead of 4x... if it's succesful........ i'm guessing not, but figured i'd ask anyway.

Pretty sure you will get a speed increase. That's the whole idea of doing it. Haven't heard of anyone having a problem cross flashing......as long as the instructions are followed it is a simple thing to do.
I was reading the site yesterday & if the unthinkable happens you can supposedly get the drive back up & running with the original firmware. Something like that anyway. |

Yep, just grab the firmware that you want to upgrade to plus the tweak file. Also download omnipatcher so you can put the tweak file into the firmware & save it, then run.
