Default Do you need an access point for wireless link?

I am planning on giving my handheld pc internet access by 802.11b. For the pc to talk to the handheld, can a 802.11b pci card not just connect the the 802.11b compact flash card on the handheld pc? Or do I definately need an access point connected to my network to give the handheld network access?

Access points look to cost alot more than just a wireless adapter, and I am being a tight git with me dosh!

Cool

It should be possible to just adhoc the cards. You'd have to bridge or share the connection on the PC if you want the handheld to reach the Internet.
