Default Smart Card Reader on laptop

Hello,

I just bought a Dell Latitude D600 Laptop. According to it's specs (located here) It has " One Smart Card reader "

I'm wondering what this does, and what can be done with it. What is a smartcard exalty, and how would you obtain one?

Thanks,

lieb39

Smart Cards can basically be used for security and authentication purposes. I can also be used for storage, but security is the primary application at the moment.

Actually they're trying to get people to download coupons onto their credit cards and other secure uses for the smart chip. Like validating credit cards with it instead of the 3 number technique.
