Question cpu fan stopped WTF???

I put together a PC the other day for my girlfriend. it's an msi nforce with 256 ddr and Athlon XP 1800+. I put a thermal take volcano on it to keep it really cool. now randomly when we boot the pc, at bios start up screen, we get a warning message that the cpu fan has stopped. press F1 for help. I shut down the thing immediately, opened the case and checked the fan , cables etc. rebooted and the warning message was gone. after a few reboots more the message was back. so i decided to leave the case open to check the fan, the next time it happened the fan was working fine at full speed.
I have noticed that when this happens the USB keyboard does not load. so i have to use a usb to ps2 converter to make it work. i have decided that it's time to move on and I'm now planning to send my girlfriend on "permanent vacation", so I need help fast. I don't want more calls from her wanting me to fix her PC and who knows what else if I'm dating another chick.

Seriously though, is the Fan connected to the correct spot on the MoBo?

This sort of happened to me, except my computer just would not stay on, it would turn on and then off. To fix this, if there is a separate plug for monitoring the rpm of the fan, unplug it. Or take the yellow wire i believe and take it off of the plug. What is happening I believe is that there is a spike in the rpm due to the rpm monitor plugged in, and the bios does not like this, so it gives a warning message. Try that and see if it works.

Make sure the yellow wire is not connected to the cpu fan header, as that is what is causing your problems. If cpu fan speed is important to you, then do what catch23 said, if not, then just pull the yellow wire out and plug the red and black ones into the mobo, and you should be all set.

You should be able to turn off this warning in your bios, to make it so it doesnt check to see whether the cpu fan is spinning at all.
