Need some opinions...

Hi gang!
I could use some opinions right now...I have a P4 1.3 GHz with 128mb RDRam. I have an opprotunity to get a P4 1.8, but it uses the PC133 Ram. I know the RDRam is much faster, but the CPU upgradeability has me concerned...the newer CPU's are all 478 pin, but my CPU is the older 423 pin. I should add that I am on a tight budget, and the 1.8 is a great deal...or should I just buy another 128m of RDRam and forget about the 1.8?
Thanks in advance! P

I would recomend getting the addional RAM. In the long run you will notice more problems with running out of RAM/ speed drops due to lack of RAM. Than you would be able to notice the incresse in chip speed. Plus if you get more RAM you system will run faster ^_^

thats got nothing to do with what he asked......

you can add more memory that always helps, to a point then your wasting money, get above 512, sometimes 256 and your buying memory that you will never use as most never have enough running to use it all. if all you want is a little faster chip, the 423 they made up to 2GHz chips. hunt on Ebay or computer show and get one.
if you get the 478 pin then the processor will be much more upgradeable, as they will be up to 3GHz by end of year. you can add more memory alittle cheaper. the difference in memory speed depending on what you do might not even be noticeable.

best thing to do is look at the big picture of what you do with it now and plan to in future. everyone would like a corvette but why waste getting it when a suv better suits you needs.

don't know what you specifically do with computer but i have found most people don't put enough demand on a it to need the fastest processor of the day or 2 gigs of ram. you can save hundreds buying whats best for the money that day instead of the newest. you certainly don't need a 2GHZ processor and 1 gig of rambus memory to surf the Internet, play solitaire and balance your check book.

i have a 1.3 p4 also but i got 1 gig rdram.... works very nice for all i use it for (which is a lot! i'm on it 8hours of the day lol) i say upgrade in ram... that's all i did.

Not sure what you mean by the P4 1.8 using only PC133. The processor can be used with any type of memory, it's the motherboard that determines what type of memory you can use. If the processor is a 423-pin P4, it should go in your mobo with the memory that you have (you might need to update the BIOS as your current one might not support that multiplier). But like an earlier post said, you should go with the memory as your CPU will run pretty much everything available now. Hope this helps.

the first set of boards for each the 423 and the 478 were rambus.....the second set of boards for 478 were sdram as it was cheaper, now there is also a third set for 478 that support ddr. that is what he meant by pc133 sdram, its prob 845 chipset board for 478

guess if you want a useful answer/opinion you need to state what the machine's application is

heavy gaming, 3d graphics and such, a faster processor would be good
multiple office apps, 2d graphics, surfing then yea just memory might help more
if you want a machine that can be upgraded for a long period of time, then something else might be in order...............

Okay, now I think I understand. He is thinking of upgrading the CPU and mobo. That makes sense. I thought he was just talking about upgrading the CPU only. I would still recommend gettting the memory. You can get another 256MB (2x128) of PC800 RDRAM from Googlegear for about $114US.

I guess I should have taken the time to make myself a little clearer (I'm at work...shhhhhh). Yes, I would be replacing both CPU and mobo. It is basically a swap one setup for the other one deal...no cost. I don't do a lot of 3d games, but I do play them. I think right now I am leaning towards keeping the system I have. I wasn't aware Intel made speeds up to 2GHz in socket 423.
Thanks for all the replies, you all are a great bunch!(even the guy that told me to buy AMD!:D )

I say Buy 256 mb ram or more if you like, and if you want more speed...you can overclock your cpu, i have a celeron 1.3 ghz and it's running at 1.48 now..can't go higher cause then my soundcard is failing...but its worth to give that try...fans and coolers aren't that expensive you know...and i even saw onces that someone got the same celeron i have up to 2.0 ghz...

you are talking socket 370 chips.. we are talking socket 423/478 chips.....entirely different. although they have come out with a 1.7GHz 478 pin Celeron and a 1.8 too i believe. (with bus and all runs faster than most all p3's) all Intel 478 boards take it with a Bois flash.

i can get d845hvl Intel p4 boards for about $65 they are sdram boards, never had a problem, have built some 30 systems for others with and they may not be as fast as the rambus boards they do pretty well.

No no i meant that his P4 is superior to mine, and if i can overclock this one, sure that he can overclock his without problems, he gets more speed without buying a new processor, just buy some ram and maybe a new bigger cooler:D

If you go with the rd ram upgrade which sounds good remember about the C-RIMM (Continuity RIMM). Check your motherboard manual for more information.

lol if he's upgrading the ramm wouldn't he have to take the crimm out :-D

Thanks again for all your replies. I think I'll stick with the CPU for now and buy some ram. A nice new GeForce wouldn't hurt either(a birthday present hint for my wife!) :p

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
