Default RAID question

Hi There...

A quick & really dumb question for all you RAID experts out there!

If I buy a new motherboard with a raid facility, do I need to attach two drives and create a RAID array in order to use it, or could I just connect one drive to it and use it as merely an extra IDE connector?

Hope someone can help.

one drive is fine. i have 3 harddrives, but none of them are in a raid configuration currently. just using it for extra ide channels.

pretty sure it's not recommended that you connect cdrom's to raid channels, though... just harddrives.

No you can use the raid ports like a normal ide port, although there have been alot of complaints that things don't always work well but it's a case by case situation.

only some raid setups allow that my asus a7v333 only supports hard drives on the raid channels anything else will not get recognized.
