News DivX Plus Web Player Takes on Flash Video

The latest beta update to the DivX Web Player has just been released and brings with it a host of new features, including one that could help DivX carve up a slice of the web video market.

The new feature, known as DivX HiQ�, allows you to switch the videos you watch on popular video websites like YouTube, Vimeo and Daily Motion, to a high quality DivX format. According to DivX, the videos will feature "fewer interruptions, smoother playback and more vivid colors".

Flash have a solid hold on the web video market but after some serious criticism from Apple recently, as well as the emergence of HTML 5, Adobe might find Flash playing catchup for the first time in a while.

The main new features of the beta release of DivX Plus Web Player are as follows:

DivX HiQ� � use DivX Plus Web Player on YouTube and more
New Format Support � MP4 & MOV
HTML5 tag support
DXVA Hardware acceleration

News iTunes Ping Surpasses 1 Millions Users

The new social networking feature of iTunes, called iTunes Ping, has amassed over one million users within the first two days of launch.

This large number of Ping users represents about a third of all the users who have downloaded iTunes 10, though this is only a small fraction of iTunes users so far.

�One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,� said Eddy Cue, Apple�s vice president of Internet Services. �As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.�

iTunes 10 and Ping have had a bit of a rocky start, in some ways mirroring the mixed reception the iPhone 4G had due to reception problems and other technical issues. There has already been a backlash on the web about the the iTunes logo, which now has a spoof Twitter account to defend itself against criticism, and Ping itself has also come into criticism for unleashing a torrent of spam upon release.

Still, a million new users in two days isn't bad going and if Apple can press on with further improvements, Ping could end up being another successful addition to the Apple family.

Hi, there. Was wondering anyone of u have experience with this Turtle Beach Ear Force X11 Stereo Headset ? What about its performance? Is it a nice headset for xbox360? By the way, what kind of heaset do u guys use?

Hi all,

Using a WinServer2008 server, with a virtual environment within it, I am faced with trying to figure out the best way to do daily & offsite backups with this mission critical dual Mysql setups.

The total size of the C:/ drive is now approx 65gigs. It is the only server in the workplace.

Maybe a single image backup of entire C: once a week through FTP while everything else is internal office?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

NVIDIA have announced a brand new GeForce 400M series of GPUs for notebooks, claiming to offer a whopping 40% performance boost over the previous 300M series of GPUs.

The NVIDIA GeForce 400M GPUs includes:

News iTunes 10 is Here - Goodbye CD Logo, Hello Ping!

Apple has announced the arrival of iTunes 10, and with it the removal of the 'CD' logo and the addition of Ping, a "new music-oriented social network".

The new Ping service will allow users to follow artists and friends in a similar manner to Twitter, though instead of sharing 140-word 'Tweets', users can share thoughts on music, information about what you're listening to or downloading, lists of your favourite albums or songs, as well as view concert listings and share which ones you plan to go to.

"iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we're adding social networking with Ping," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With Ping you can follow your favorite artists and friends and join a worldwide conversation with music's most passionate fans."

iTunes 10 is available for free at the official iTunes website.

ok here is the deal. my neighbor got one of these for free w/fios. gave it to her 10yr old kid. she gives it to me saying it don't work. when it went to boot up it would give the significant hardware change boot speil. tried to boot in every mode imagineable. finally used the included roxio system restore and got it to boot, somewhat. once i got past the explorer.exe issue.(endtask then start task) i could see the taskbar and desktop icons. norton was expired, loaded avg pro via sd card and ran virus scan. after almost two hours comes back with 1777 viruses. i've tried everything to purge the drive of the virus(es) and nothing has worked. is the only option a full format and fresh install?

Apache server running slow in Virtualbox

Hi all,

I have this Winserver2008 tower here as an Email/File server. I created a virtual XP Pro with an apache/php/Mysql setup on it. I put the corporate website on it as well as the corporate php database to be accessed by about 10 employees concurrently.

Maneuvering through the website outside the domain is a little slow, and I am worried once this database goes into production, it will be even slower, if not lockout entirely. I am wondering if it was better to use vmware instead of virtualbox for performance in this case.

I did allot more memory to the virtual environment, looks like it helped a little, but still not "snappy" as much as I would like it be.

The hardware is a quadcore AMD 2.4 CPU/4gigDDR2 ram.

Your thoughts?

Shouldn't changes I make on a email client apply to the server?

I'm using Outlook 2010 IMAP for both live.com and gmail.com

Well, here's the situation.
For example, if i empty a folder (say, the "trash" folder for gmail, or the "deleted" folder for live mail) through Outlook 2010, it starts downloading the contents again from the email server and syncs it back to how it is on the server. Shouldn't the changes I make on the email client be a two way thing? I thought that was what IMAP does.

News Windows Phone 7 Goes Gold

Microsoft has announced that its brand new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7, has gone gold and has been released to manufacturers (RTM).

Windows Phone 7, the successor to Windows Mobile 6.5, is now rolling out to various manufacturers and carriers across the world, where last minute tweaks and modifications will be carried out. There's no precise date set yet, but the OS is currently scheduled for public release sometime in October.

Engadget have an in-depth preview of Windows Phone 7 if you want further information on the software, which is packed full of great new features. The question is however, will it be enough to challenge Apple's supremacy in the smartphone market?

I need switches

We have 4 old as dirt generic switches. They represent a major bottleneck in the network. I've been given the go ahead to get quotes. Everyone I've talked to said HP provides the best bang for the buck with their procurve series.

So the first few quotes come in. Lowest price procurve is a $130, next step is $321 then $1200 then $1700 and finally $2900. Those numbers are the only thing I completely understand about the quote. The rest of it is greek to me. I can pick out bits and pieces I understand (POE, 10/100/100BaseT) but the rest makes me feel stupid. I don't know what a 4 x SFP (mini-GBIC) Shared is. I do some research and determine what we need (the middle range one is more than enough) and we decide to let the company that provides us that quote come out.

So they run through our closets, take some notes and come back with some f'd up pricing. The $1200 is no longer there. Now they have one starting at $2500 ranging all the way up to $21k! Needless to say, I'm pissed. I feel we've been jerked around and that they are just trying to milk us since they know we are in desperate need. So I say F-em. We'll get a new quote from someone who isn't treating us like we're gullible people shopping for used cars.

But I still don't know what to get. I need 4 24 port switches. Everyone talks about 10gb backbone so you're future-proofed. I don't even know if we can support that. I mean it's just CAT5 cable in the ceiling. I didn't think that was capable of those speeds. Does anyone have any recommendations?

News Pirate Bay 'Story' To Become Film

A Swedish filmmaker is planning to release a documentary film about the infamous torrent indexing website Pirate Bay and its three founders, in part funded by users of the peer-to-peer website.

Simon Klose has already amassed over 200 hours of footage and plans to add more during the founders' appeal against their verdict. The documentary is called TPB-AFK (in case you didn't work it out, that stands for The Pirate Bay - Away from Keyboard), and Klose is calling on fans of Pirate Bay to chip in to help get the film finished, with an official website already set up for donations. Commenting on his unusual funding method, Klose said:

"I want to prove that people who claim that the network is threatening cultural creation are wrong, and I will ask the Internet for help."

"TPB AFK is not a fan movie about the Pirate Bay," Klose continues, "Neither is it a journalistic piece on copyright conflict. It’s an observational, character driven film about three guys whose hobby homepage became the embryo of a global political movement."

TPB-AFK is currently set for an autumn 2011 release.

New Website - Any Opinions?

Hey guys,

A mate and I are creating a price comparison website for technology products, initially with just a basic search but eventually with a 'build your computer' section where you can input the components and it'll search all the major vendors to find the cheapest set - it can be such a massive ball ache comparing 10 different components on 5 different websites!

Anyway, our test server is now up and running here: Technology Compared

I'd love to have anyone's opinion on this! The design is not quite finished yet and there's loads of content still to add but the basic search function is there.

VPN drops connection to specific servers for exactly 10 minutes

I am running windows 7 connected to the internet through a router using a PPPoE DSL connection.

I am connecting to a RRAS VPN server setup on a windows 2003 server machine.

When I transfer a large file from a server on the VPN (10.0.0.35), communication eventually stops with the 10.0.0.35 machine before the file transfer can complete. When this happens, communication resumes in exactly 10 minutes from when it was dropped. The connection to the VPN server is not dropped completely however. I can still communicate with the other machines on the VPN server.

I have tried connecting from Windows XP and Windows Vista with both Wired and Wireless NICs and the problem persists. I believe the problem is either with my router, my DSL conenction or the setup of the VPN server. Does anyone have ideas?
