Hit "Start" and right click on the "My Computer" entry. Hit "Show on Desktop." Also do this to "My Documents" if you wish. Or you can download the TweakUI powertoy that can let you put all the standard ones you want or don't want.

That's how it is default, but another way to fix it is to right click on desktop, properties, click the desktop tab, then click the customize desktop button at the bottom. There you can pick which icons to display.
