See the thing is that Id rather not have to do anything on the computer end. With the XBMC it acts like it's own system and just merely access the file off the network.

I had to install the crappy Zune software to stream my music, pictures and videos. And only WMV files worked. Think I'll try out TVersity now.

Why would you need the Zune software? That's for the Zune. It has nothing to do with the 360.

That's what I thought too. I just followed everything from xbox.com/pcsetup.

Just an Update:

After playing around with my cousin's 360 I have decided to get the original Xbox. The 360 requires was too much setup on the computer side. I was thinking of eventually buying a new case for the Xbox like a transparent one or something so that it will look different and not so bland.

I also use XboxMediaCenter, it just beats absolutely everything else.
I do use the 360 to check out stuff on the marketplace, HD-DVD and occasionally DVDs as well.

it works flawlessly and accepts any file type to stream through the 360...easy to set up and even easier to use

Thanks all for the suggestions.

But after much consideration I have decided to hold off on getting an XBox. I decided to up the RAM in my laptop first since I use that everyday. I bought 2x 512MB sticks, upgraded from 2x256MB, my laptop is now maxed out on memory.

I've got an old Xbox that I barely use anymore, I might get around to soft-modding it just so I can use XBMC.

My cousin has an original xbox that has a mod chip. He uses XBMC to play music, video and view pictures over his network. He is able to connect to both Media Center and XP machines.

I want to setup an Xbox in a similar fashion, but I need to know if the 360 can do this out of the box. I would prefer to get the 360 (will take some time to save up for it) as it's newer and I've been edging to try the Star Trek Legacy game. I know the 360 has the 3 features I'm looking for (music, video and pictures) but what kind of requirements do they have?

XBMC can simply browse and share on a computer, how does the 360 work?

I think that's all for now,
Mike
I have a 360 and you can link to your computer using Windows Media Connect. You can show movies from your computer via your 360 on your tv. I also have seen a device that connects to the 360 that goes wireless to your computer. You cannot go online (Xbox live) with the mod Xbox because they can detect your oversized harddrive. You will be banned from xbox live forever.

Buy an xbox for media and a 360 for live, problem solved

In an attempt for my cousin to get his friend's PSP to control his XBMC he had to enable an HTTP server in XBMC. This got me thinking of trying a web broswer and XBMC does have a web interface which is freakin awesome so IF I do get an Xbox I'm sold on the original.

Just thought I'd give a final update sorry for the big bump.

get the 360 ..but wait a couple months because they have a newer updated model coming out ... and it wont be long before many different flavors of life or the onboard OS is hacked completely.

Anyway ..the newer model is supposed to have HDMI ... HDCP ..blahblah blah ... might be for better or for worse ... and of course its Hidef ..so if you gots a hidef tv ..then its all good.

Care for some tea?

I have no use for playing games on it. It's strictly as a media extender. I know the 360 can do that but it's extremely limited where as the XBMC mod is MUCH MUCH more advanced and flexible.

Final Update:

I bought an Original XBox Today. Cost me $270 which includes the XBox ($150), the mod chip ($100), XMBC software (installed at no cost), and upgrade to a 120GB drive (had to supply the drive, $20 for installation).

Now I just need to get this for the remote (the other MS one doesn't work with XBMC as well and it's ugly):

I would've soft-modded it, and installed the HDD with XBMC for $50.

The chip is better, it can be disabled. Like I said, this is not for online play just the media aspect.

Also depending on the manufacture date not all Xbox can have a larger hard drive with a soft mod. The chip is guaranteed for life by the installer which is a nice plus.
