This is just a rant....
Seriously, Nero "used to be" a pretty good piece of burning software. I stopped using it along time ago when Free open source options became available that are much better in Ripping burning CD's DVD's ans the like..etc..etc.

I happened to notice today that Nero's latest software is 370 MB!!!!!!

what are they putting in there?>

how sad...........

rant over......

I don't like the new nero either. It is more bloat then anything. Filled with 90% of useless stuff.

You forgot to rant about the frequent 100-200 MB updates.

I stayed with Nero 6 even though I've had chances to upgarde for next to nothing.

Nero is no longer a burning package, it is now a multimedia processing suite.

I actually do end up using a lot of the features occasionally so I don't mind that much. But I still end up going to other packages for high end video editing.

They should have stopped at V6 or even 5. They have sadly lost their perspective. Jack of all trades, master of none has bloated them.

I agree, anything past Nero 6 I won't touch. I tried Nero 6 on Vista back when I was beta testing and it says it was incompatible but I said install anyways and it seemed to work fine.

but now I'm back on XP

    It's being badly managed.

If you rely on new versions of a product for your income you have to keep adding new features to justify the price tag you're asking. This 'business practise' always leads to bloatware and eventually ruin.

Why ruin? The existing customer base gets increasingly unhappy as bugs they come across don't get fixed and are lured into buying the next version or jumping to another similar product to cure their problems. Which of course it don't, they just come across new ones.

Nero isn't the first to fall trap to this roller-coaster of a disaster. Just ask Norton/PartitionMagic/Ghost/MSOffice users. Ask any person who's been using software for over 20 years. This is nothing new.

    What's the alternative for Nero?
To develop a support model role. This is where you offer various degrees of the product. Beginners, Serious and professional users, etc.

You then keep fixing the bugs in these pieces of software, add support for new hardware, etc. and the customer pays a small yearly charge for support. Once you get a customer on this gravy train, you charge a little more if the customer wants to come off and then jump back on.

This way you get regular yearly income and your bank is happy. The customer is happy as the product gets better and the customer only pays for what they want. Not the non-essential rubbish.

One nice feature this model gives us is that the company keeps the software bug free and isn't dropped as soon as a new OS comes out. The company has to adopt (nah is forced into) the frame of mind of thinking first about keeping their existing customers happy (imagine that?) and not changing the damn product just because it thinks this will attract new customers.

This way of doing software works as Accounting software packages has been using this model for decades...

and what about all the codecs and crap it installs when you just select the burning app, which in turn can have effects on other codecs on the system, why does a burning app need codecs? i would call that bloat

I've never liked NEro. The interface always felt awkward to me. I used MediaPlayer or Acoustica, but my burning needs were usually simple: "how many tunes can we squeeze onto this one?"
So..I shall creep back & let u experts wrangle it out....
U can keep the .02 tho...
