A quick one. Edit: That was a lie.

www.osnn.net is now both a Windows XP and a Vista featured/related community, which is pretty exciting as we have all worked hard to get ourselves solely running Windows Vista so we can experience the problems of users first hand. There are definitely a few issues I have experienced and it has been a real buzz to work through them with others, I still have outstanding issues some of which I will cover a little later on. You can check out our little link at Microsoft on this page: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/win...y/related.mspx - the description reads “Community forums and news about Windows Vista.” – I am sure we can come up with something better than that, so let me know and I will ask Nick White if he can get it changed!
As far as OSNN goes, we are looking at making changes and always are, but we need to see what happens. Virtuanews which we use for the front page is pretty damn dated now compared to other CMS applications that are out there so I am keeping my options open for something that will connect nicely with vBulletin – which is still great and has more features like blogs on the way which I might then redirect this site to etc. But for the time being I might customise this one a little. I like the theme on here, but it came out of the box and I will need to make some adjustments to get it away from the stock template and to make it mine and give it that special touch!
I have actually created a Community Server 2007 based site at work and am really impressed how it neatly folds in on itself, forums using ASP still don’t seem to be able to compete with the likes of vBulletin and IPB but they have definitely come a long way, these kind of sites seem to be ideal for intranets though:
Corporate blogging has really become a big thing recently and it feels like it has really opened up Microsoft and made them less of a big scary corporation, but lots of people working and really feeling they are making a difference.
I have basically dumped all my documents from the last three years in there, it includes scripts, micro-web pages I used for checking various logs, integrated site maps using Whatsup Professional to display real time data. Pretty stunning stuff and everything uses tags so is easy to find. The current system uses a big shared drive with documents everywhere and I can never find what I want! I am seeing resistance to switching to this system, but having already ditched most of my relevant documents and emails on to this thing I am being particularly stubborn about keeping it.
If it expands more I may even try to find an application to stream the headlines to the desktops of those that might be interested, all internally of course!
Elsewhere at work, I hear murmurs that the desktop side of the office are starting to think about Windows Vista which will be great as it will give me the chance to play a little more with the Windows Deployment Server software, which I have already installed having pushed out Windows 2003 SP2 to a few of the less critical servers around the place.
I am already using Office 2007 and of course Excel and Word are vastly different, using them at work has really given me the chance to learn them better but the big surprise is the changes to Outlook that I hadn’t noticed as a home user.
One thing you might notice is how it can recognise conversations in emails and lightly shades the start of the next email. Combined with Windows Desktop search it can instantly search emails as well as files on your desktop.
What I noticed today though came as a result of me entering data into the wrong calendar, so I had to add a second calendar. I now had two calendars being displayed side-by-side from the calendar tab, which was cool enough but in order to make it a little more readable I wanted to change them so one was on top of the other. Instead I found an even better option – it has now merged two calendars from the server into one great big overlay calendar for me – it is awesome!
There are plenty of other things still do as well, with an update for Office Live Communication Server looming and the recent release of Whatsup Gold 11. So things are definitely still busy at work.
