What just happened? This is the neglected official blog of the Electronic Punk - http://www.electronicpunk.com - The as-of-yet-undecided-title-el-presidente of OSNN.net. He totally promises to blog more than twice a year.
The continued ramblings of an x64 idiot

The buzz of 64bit is wearing off a little now, which isn't a bad thing - it means I am using a brand new 64bit Operating System and so much of it is working - apart from the increased speed which you also get used to - that it just feels like any old WindowsXP system. I haven’t had any new drivers installed, in fact I leaked the 76.71 set I got the other day to a few places and the general feedback seems to be good, there seems to be a few issues with SLI setups, but that is even the case with the 32bit versions - it isn't something that I can check as I don't have an SLI setup, donations anyone?
I got my uxtheme.dll cracked as I mentioned in my previous blog, was a little bit of hassle and I always like to tip-toe around a new Operating System until I am comfortable with it - there is nothing worse than getting a true STOP error ... not even BSOD covers the frustration this can cause. I had to boot into Safe Mode and rename the existing uxtheme.dll (I went for the old classic uxtheme.bak) and copy the new one in. Fortunately there is only one instance of the file this time around so that’s a bonus, as far as I can tell. I did initially try replacing the original file in a normal boot after stopping the themes service, but it seemed to replace it with the original file again. Perhaps someone could try stopping the themes service and renaming the file and copying the new one in and getting back to me. Or I could waste system resources and use WindowBlinds? Nah, *** that.
I got the NVIDIA DVD Decoders installed with no issues, well one issue my credit card number had changed so I had to try and dig out the original e-mail again. So I got that up and running with no other steps in Windows Media Player and watched a movie, for testing purposes of course. I also tried the codec in Zoom Player (my video player of choice) and as with the 32bit version you still couldn't use the audio codec due to licence issues (that I still dispute to this day - why would licensing codecs not affect ANY other player or codec pack?), I guess I will switch back to PowerDVD eventually, but I have an NVIDIA card and want to use NVIDIA codecs which my player of choice, is that too much to ask?
Been playing a lot of Unreal Tournament 2004 recently, instagib team deathmatch, it is a beautiful thing and in turn it runs beautifully. I was quitting out the game last night and it froze for about five seconds - I was of course thinking of that DEP error, but my desktop appeared, of course as usual I play this game at maximum settings (the announcer feels obliged to comment on my settings) so a lot of stuff would have been in memory.
I was beginning to think that Counter-strike: Source was running slow. I run the game at 1280x1024 which is as high as my 17" TFT monitor will go, 4x Anti-aliasing, 6x Anisotropic Filtering, High Details and Reflect World. But I only get 60fps, the shame of it! But wait, that isn't slow, is it? Not only that but I am pretty sure that I am seeing, in game, the highest visual quality I have ever seen in Counter-strike: Source - almost made me gasp, but I was just a little frustrated that it seemed slow (I was using cl_showfps 1), but then 60fps. I don't know when I am spoilt.
I haven't got any other applications installed as far as I can think, unless you count the various updates that have been released. I am also a tester of the Microsoft Update, a real tester that is, not just some chump who agreed to the terms and conditions on http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and while I picked up the Office 2003 SP1 almost immediately after installing Office 2003 no other updates came, so I went to OfficeUpdate and grabbed everything available (that bug in the French thesaurus was driving me nuts, maybe). Sadly none of the big security updates seemed to hit Microsoft Update that night and I seriously doubt whether the RTM version of Windows x64 is new enough to include them? But then the updates are now monthly and the RTM is less than a month old, so who knows? One update that did appear on the list of updates and also demand to be installed was the April edition of the Malicious Spyware Tool. Installed via a manual Microsoft Update, then prompted to install it as an Automatic Update, fair enough. Installed again. Prompted to install it again. I don't know where the bug lies yet, could be a bug with Microsoft Update, but I sadly think it is more likely to be a bug with Windows x64 as I couldn't install the web version either (I missed the error and will re-add it to this blog a little later). Blogtastic, Ryan loves my long blogs!
