A place for my thoughts.
New Server - Sort of
Posted December 6th, 2008 at 9:55pm by Admiral Michael
So I miniturized my server.
I got a MSI Fuzzy 690T miniITX motherboard from a friend with 1GB of memory. I used the CPU from my desktop (AMD Athlon X2 4600+) and bought a new one for my desktop (AMD Athlon X2 5400+).
It has 4 hard drives:
60GB Windows Drive
160GB Downloads Drive
500GB Media Drive
500GB Backup Drive
and runs Windows 2003 Standard Server.
Here's a pic if it currently:

I just need a case. The lack of a case was the only thing stopping me from migrating from my old one so I decided to just run it like this for now.
My old server is now my parent's desktop. It has a AMD Athlon 3200+ CPU with an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard and 1GB of RAM.

Thanks. I was laughing so hard I hurt myself. It looks like the cables take up more room than the hardware. Nice job.Posted December 6th, 2008 at 10:16pm by LeeJend

Ours is about $250 a month. Gotta bring that down, I'm hoping this may help altho I don't know what the old vs new power consumption is.
I use my laptop mostly so this is my file server. I have a desktop but I just use it for grunt processing :P I had the desktop originally for gaming but got sick of system requirements so I just bought a XBox 360 instead and switched to console gaming.Posted December 8th, 2008 at 6:35pm by Admiral Michael

I just built myself a new server that is power conscience. 5 1 TB drives (for storage), 2 60 GB drives (for the OS), 65 Watt AMD x2 64 bit processor. It comes out to about the same power consumption as my old server, but with more space and CPU power.
Currently I personally have 1 file server, 1 gateway and 2 laptops running. The file server and gateway are 24/7 as is expected, and one of the two laptops is 24/7 the other I roam with, and thus is only plugged in when it needs juice and that can be both at home and at school.Posted December 10th, 2008 at 1:55am by X-Istence
