Firstly I would like to thank both Hewlett Packard and Ivy Worldwide for getting me out here and helping me avoid going to work for nearly two weeks. (Partial credit to Prince William too)

So I landed in Madrid late last night, utterly failing my mission of going paperless having waved my phone at the parking attendants and check-in clerks and receiving a handful of papers back instead. At least I tried to be green.

I arrived a little late for the casual dinner with the other attendees so I decided to eat in the hotel bar picking out the only item I recognised a cheeseburger, I hope to sample other Spanish delicacies in the coming days.

I am here with these fellow bloggers: @paulmiller @martinmacleod @hvredevoort and @HPConvergeIT

Today is considered the business day and started at 10am with the HP keynote covering whats HP has been doing to push their converged technology forwards and a few real examples of where it had been deployed. I am looking forward to learning a little more about the BladeSystem Matrix, so will blog a little more on that when I do. This was followed by some words by Richard Curran from Intel talking about roadmaps and notably once again refuting the claim that Itanium was dead. (An effort by Oracle to make their customers switch to their own Sparx systems apparently), but we shall see.

I have also attended a break out session on how the rules of networking had changed, talking about TippingPoint (acquired by HP after 3com acquired TippingPoint themselves) and how switching to a single vendor could both drastically reduce both incompatibility and cost. I am quite interested in TippingPoint so I am hoping to learn a little more about that as well during my time here.

Later this afternoon I will be getting an exhibition tour as well as recording a podcast, which is scary but we will see how it goes, if I can thing of one intelligent thing to say then it has been a good day.

I'll be posting updates mostly via my Twitter account so if you want to see me posting almost technical tweets for at least two days be sure to keep tabs on it:

So before I start I would like to thanks Ivy Worldwide for inviting me out to Tech Ed Europe here in Berlin, with a special thanks to Terri Stratton and Megan Link from Waggener Edstrom for sorting out the last minute complications and generally making this all possible.

What is also interesting though lacking sentiment is the fact that this is the first time I have been in Germany since I was actually born here at a British Hospital nearly thirty years ago. So that was lovely.

Tech Ed generally isn’t typically the kind of conference I would attend as it is very much geared towards developers and various aspects of large scale enterprises businesses, with generally very little consumer action but fortunately Microsoft did recently launch a new mobile platform you might have heard of and were very eager to show it off.

In the main Microsoft hall there was a stand allowing people to play with various Windows Phones with all three European HTC devices being available to manhandle and there was never a moment when I passed that there wasn’t someone playing with of the fifteen or so devices on display.

As an HD2 user I felt touching the HD7 was just a slap in the face, but although I didn’t really like the look of the Trophy from the media I had seen (considering it the uglier step-brother of the Mozart), having it sat in my hand felt good and very easy to use.

Observations from that little play had me noting that applications actually had cash values attached to them; I had always assumed they would be Microsoft Points so it will be interesting to see what the difference in pricing is between markets. It was also great to see so much free content available from the Marketplace including all the HTC applications (on my current device such updates would generally require getting your hands on a cooked ROM and starting from scratch).

The Microsoft staff on hand were of course very helpful when you weren’t trying to steal T-shirts but I am not sure there role really went further than smiling and casually scrolling their fingers up and down the home screen. But of course, there were questions I could try asking!

Ever since I started using the beta of Windows Live Messenger 2011, I have been working hard to consolidate all my social network and by all I actually just mean Windows Live and Facebook but I already knew that I couldn’t use the same Live account to connect to Messenger on my mobile 6.5 device or I would be disconnected from the account which was quite happily signed into both my laptop and desktop. Had this changed? No. The Microsoft guy had no idea, so tried it and was immediately booted off. So while I can have my feeds amazingly showing data from all over the social network (cough) I would not be able to use the same account on both my phone and my desktop. Desktop wins sadly, so we will have to see what happens. However, the groundwork is in place so perhaps one day we will see a single sign on – the current application was developed by third party after all so maybe there is more in the works.

So I whipped out my HD2 device, the guy would no longer look directly at me – just kidding - I asked if Microsoft was still committed to supporting Windows Mobile "Classic" as stated at the time Windows Mobile was launched. Of course! I demonstrated that on my latest HD2 ROM released by HTC just last month that running Bing from Germany (or the UK) would tell me that the application was no longer supported and suggest either going to the mobile site (yes) or quitting (no), he couldn’t really help me there but did agree that Google Maps was a lovely alternative.

I am not entirely sure how we got on to the topic, but we started discussing the recent videos of Windows Phone 7 running on the HD2, I mentioned how I didn’t believe they were fakes but rather prototypes running a Windows Phone 7 type experience on top of a 6.5 operating system, he didn’t know much about that but did mention he had no doubt that it would happen for real eventually although it wouldn’t be optimal because either then RAM or storage was slower than the similar HD7, so I’ll be checking out the hardware comparisons between the two when I have time – although I did mention I also had the EVO 4G version of Android 2.2.1 running quite happily over the top of Windows Mobile 6.5 from my SD card so all else fails there will eventually be an option to get that running natively and I am sure the HD2 will have no issues there.

We also learned that tiles cannot be duplicated on the home tile screen which really removes the possbity of having a work display and home display, at least with the same tiles but that is really a moot point.

I also had the opportunity to attend a few sessions on Windows Phone 7 which briefly demonstrated various applications before quickly opening up Visual Studio 2010. Having seen those even I, as non-developer, am feeling the sudden urge to get all the software downloaded and have a go because honestly it feels like a snap to get a really great application created. Obviously, I am not talking about some amazing 3D application, but rather a simple application pulling down OSNN feeds and data.

Each of the sessions I attended had different applications demonstrated and it was good to see so many ready to go, including both Amazon’s Kindle and Tesco’s home shopping.

Incomplete sections:

Microsoft was tight lipped about roadmaps.
Cut paste, tethering, display out to television (pocket controller) updates

Microsoft Kinnect was demonstrated, some desktop stuff, also office 365 to some extent.

I spent 60 Euros downloading the Conan show, but it was fortunately removed from my bill. Because such data usage had to be a glitch right?

So one of the things I have noticed while making many of the changes to OSNN over the last few weeks if the quality of the adverts.

Giving the users the option to subscribe and hide all adverts is far too tempting to not include myself so I honestly won't see them all that often. However, as I have been working on the site I have not only had them enabled for my various test accounts but been fairly disgusted at how bad they are.

Every other advert seems to be about how some house wife has discovered the ultimate way to make her teeth whiter and while I briefly found this fairly interesting, my attention was not held.

Now that the various ad blocks have near enough been finalized I am going to try and work towards making cooler and more relevant adverts.

The current OSNN adverts:

As it stands at the moment I have a Google advert at the top, which of course are pretty good and generally will display relevant text ads.

Unregistered users will see a rectangle advert at the top as well as green text links on display over all forum posts, registered users will not see these. (registration is free!)

On the front page there is a advertisement block to the right.

And another Google advert in the footer.
The archive shows an advert rectangle on the left and another in the header, I don't really expect the archive to be used.

The old virtuanews site, which I expect to visited less and less and ultimately removed has various Google and other adverts scattered, it will not really be maintained but they share the same codebase as the rest of the site.

So anyway, while I don't intend to change what the Google or Vibrant adverts display and very likely couldn't but I am going work on the others where I can. Burst have been our main provider for quite some time and I am hoping they will take a look at what I have done with their own news system, give me some advice on how I can improve it and perhaps extend the categories we are in on their system.

As part of our work with HP, I may well take part in their affiliates program which should produce some good relevant adverts but we shall see how that plays out.

I maintain my stance on intrusive adverts and will never willingly add pop-ups or pop-unders to the site. I will also do my best to not add advert types that play any kind of sound without the user initiating it.

Lastly, advert blockers are becoming increasingly popular and while I could well make life a little more irritating for those that do block adverts, I don't have time to do anything like that,, I just hope those doing it do appreciate that I both want to increase the quality of our adverts and that they also are the only thing that keeps the sight running other than those who decide to subscribe.

I just wanted to get some of that down!

Obviously the meer existence of such a blog means I am avoiding doing something else, but I promise I will do that next! You are not the boss of me!

So firstly I am sad to report some deaths in the community! One of the algae eaters and both Firemouths died sadly, I think the firemouths were rather prone to infections and although I tried my best, they seemed to get weak and die. It was at different times and the second clearly had an infection which seemed to be going away after treatment but it suddenly became very clear I would be removing it from the tank the following morning.

I didn't buy any new fish for quite some time, last week actually. The remaining fish are getting quite big so I was very hesistant to put more in - there is plenty of room but you alwas want to give them their space especially when they are larger.

Although I rearrange the tank a little when I clean it I try to keep various things in play such as plenty of places to hide, I have added a funky bubble column as I got angry and broke the last one on some gravel. The current plants finally seem to be lasting longer as well and not eaten so much which is nice as replacing them every two weeks was becoming a pain!

Some of the existing fish that I didn't get to capture last night are on the right.

The first photo is one I can only remember as Tricactus something and he has really started getting more interesting over the last few weeks. Previously it would only make an appearance as night and at feeding time - I was starting to think it couldn't swim and could only bounce along the bottom but recently it has been all over the place really showing off how damn ugly and yet beautiful it is with its golden fins.

The second photo is showing one of the two Synodontis, I love these fish and one of the two was from my previous small tank. The two of them together only care about each other and none of the other fish and can often be found chasing each other around or playing in the same area of the tank. The second one I purchased was the same size as the first and they have both grown noticeably since I furst got them.

I got a new oscar to go with the other smaller oscar as they seem to pair up nicely when they are not fighting ,it worked out being the same size so that was good, I didn't measure the other one or anything but it is very hard to tell when you are down at the store.

In another effort to reduce fighting I also got another large fish, this time a red parrot fish (yet another cichlid) and it worked great because rather than fighting the oscars were far more intereste in staying away from it.

I would still say the parrot fish is in charge of the tank, but I suspect it won't be long before the oscars realise that it isn't actually capable of biting and they are, but at the moment the headbutt it dishes out is enough to chase them away and it doesn't damage either of the parties involved.

You can see the parrot fish in the third photo to the right and in the fourth photo one of the smaller oscars running away from the parrot fish for no reason.

There is another fish in there as well, eats algae and has a ball just doing its own thing, I forgot about it when taking photos so it wasn't out and about so perhaps we shall see it in the next exciting fish blog.

So the longer term members will have noticed that over the last year or so and a gradual decline before that I hadn’t been playing a large part in the OSNN community and I just wanted to go over what I have been up to.

I guess part of it stemmed from the pressure to redesign the site which would have meant skinning and tweaking two separate systems. When I came home from work at night I really just wanted to chill out and enjoy myself. The Virtuanews system was an interest project, but hard work to skin with almost all page elements being spaced out in different yet similar templates. With the collapse of its own site and no real design community it got harder and harder to maintain it as vBulletin continued to change.

Regardless, I was looking for a new style but never really found anything. I met a girl and she became my everything, nothing else mattered. I wanted to be with her all the time and that was perhaps too much because a year and a half later our deteriorating relationship got to the point where she just wanted to be friends, which in reality actually meant complete ignore me.

Around this same time, I left my network engineer job at an MOD contractor as part of a mutual agreement in which they paid me to leave quietly. Basically I didn’t like a new manager in our department, I felt my work load decreasing dramatically and got unhappier as time went on. Then an issue that could have been handled within the department got blown out of proportion and I made the choice to leave. Not such a bad thing really, I had been there over four years and had learnt so much about working with Windows in a company, but they were falling so far behind the times, (I had almost got Windows Vista deployed but a legacy application prevented it).

These two events really knocked me down and I couldn’t focus, eat or sleep. I just didn’t want to do anything or get out of bed, visiting OSNN would mean work and I just couldn’t face it. I didn’t even want to see friends or family. I started playing World of Warcraft again in a very serious fashion planning shot rotations, gear upgrades, macro writing, researching game mechanics and doing everything I could to play the game to the maximum. I kept up to date with various aspect of technology but didn’t really want to be a part of it preferring my fake little world of pixelated orcs.

What changed? No idea, perhaps self-healing, boredom due to the extent I played the game, pressure from friends/family and the urge to get on and face up to my responsibilities.

Regardless, I am back and working hard to get my life back into order. I am actively seeking a new job with several possibilities (although only one I really really want) and feel like socialising a little more.

I am still playing Warcraft because frankly I do enjoy it, but not as much as I was, mostly for large group play in encounters called raids with my guild www.maligned-guild.com (website I also designed based off another template) and my former guild www.conviction-guild.org (also a site I designed from scratch, although their forums were again based off a template)

I have loved finally integrating my planned redesign of OSNN having finally found a theme to base it from, the developments in vBulletin have made my vision come to life and I beam with pride at what has been accomplished this week and once again love coming to visit the site.

Thanks to the team and everyone that has stuck around during these dark times and I hope you can see that I am working hard to throw my new found energy into every aspect of the site.

What of the future? It is all looking much better and I still have many things I want to integrate into the new OSNN system now that the major work is out of the way, having everything under the same vBulletin roof makes the work a lot easier and I will be covering some of the lesser known aspects of the new site in another blog soon.

Dear Julie,
We want you to be the first to know that Buzz Corps as a company will soon be evolving into its new identity: Ivy Worldwide. The rapid growth of social media has given us the opportunity to overgrow our boundaries, and along with that evolve the concept and name of our company. While our company name and offerings are changing, we will still carry out the same philosophy which is that we work with the community to create programs that deliver mutual benefits for your sites and our clients. Without the support you have shown us and the lessons we have learned from you, this growth would not have been possible. Thank you.

With the new name we’ll also need a new logo and this is where we would like to ask for your help.

I sent some screenshots of the new Windows Mobile themes over to Long Zheng (from www.istartedsomething.com ) two days ago and I can’t help be amused at how far they have already spread around the internet. Perhaps I should have posted them up myself, but I wanted to go a little more in depth and cover my experiences with Windows Mobile 6.5 and what we can look forward to with its release.

The Windows operating system for desktops and servers aren’t the only versions getting a new release this year as Microsoft are also releasing Windows Mobile 6.5 and rebranding the lot of them as Windows Phones.

Windows Mobile 6.1 seemed like a minor upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 and although the Standard version received an update to its interface the Professional (or touch screen) version did not. Changes included mostly things for Enterprise such as domain enrolment and compatibility with System Center Mobile Device Manager.

6.1 did however start attempting to simplify things for home users with threaded SMS and enhanced zoom in Internet Explorer but even with HTC’s implantation of Manilla (shown to the right) it still lacked the ease of use that devices such as the Apple iPhone have.

Windows Mobile 6.5 was, again, supposed to be a small upgrade but with the delay of Windows Mobile 7 to next year more and more features have been added to it, my interest peaked and I decided to start taking a look at it.

My current device is the beautiful HTC Touch HD and having heard some much conflicting news, I am pretty doubtful that this device will get a 6.5 firmware – officially at least. However there are many talented people over at www.xda-developers.com that can already reverse engineering updated ROMs to other devices and have already done so with the latest available version of Windows Mobile 6.5 so I decided to take a look.

Sadly, this isn’t as easy as downloading a firmware and running it. Devices are protected to prevent illegitimate firmwares from being created or vendor specific firmwares from being installed on other non-branded devices, but once again the XDA developers have worked around this by creating a custom boot loader that will allow this process.

Having unprotected my device I downloaded Miri’s latest creation (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=493911 ) which has brought my device up to Windows Mobile 6.5 running CE 5.2.21202. The ROM is an amazing piece of work but it is important to stress that it is has been custom made from a beta firmware – but that doesn’t stop us taking a look!

The most publicised change in Windows Mobile 6.5 is the new interface visible from what is known as the today screen. Last year it was announced that the Zune would one day be more tightly integrated with Windows Mobiles and the start of this work is apparent as the interface seems to merge features of both the Zune and Windows Media Center.

Even for a beta running on something it wasn’t necessarily designed for, the interface is working very quickly and is already very responsive. Comparing the images of what has been publically released the version I am using has either been customised or has not been given the PR lick of pain that the public images have.

For example a shot for promoting Windows Marketplace has the action buttons “Alarm” and “Menu” whereas the build I am using shows “Contacts” and the unrefined “Set”. These are easily changed, but show that the product hasn’t yet reached the stage where things are nicely refined and tied down.

The today screen doesn’t have everything you need available in one “touch” but does make it easy to see if you have text, email, appointments or if you have missed calls. It is fully designed to be easily used with fingers over stylus and responds to both upward and downward motions as well as sideways.

I gave some screenshots to Long earlier as this is the first build that includes some previously announced themes by well known (although it isn’t a scene I am overly familiar with) artists. While the screenshots only really show the wallpaper, they also include custom colours and could – with the release of the shipping versions –include sound schemes and different icons.

The first screenshot shows the default theme as it comes from Miri’s cooked ROM. I believe this is actually just the ‘Classic Blue’ theme with custom wallpaper as the menu colour’s are the same, however as I am a minimalist I am sticking with it.

I don’t really understand who the target audience are for these wallpapers if I had to be honest. While the desktop versions of Windows include a wide variety of wallpapers many of these are very eccentric and I hope that some tamer versions are also made available.

While the above shots only show the wallpapers, the screen to the right demonstrates the Isaac Misrahi purple theme a little more and you can also see a slight tint on the formatting bar.

A theme generator will also be available once Windows Mobile 6.5 is generally available which will allow you to choose your own wallpaper, colour scheme and then create the theme package for you.

As well as changing the look of the Today Page, Microsoft has also done some considerable work on the mobile Start Menu which Long has talked about it in detail here: http://www.istartedsomething.com/200...ple-ingenuity/

Again the start menu is very responsive with both a stylus and fingers. Although I haven’t played with it extensively it is far better than what is available now.

The only issues I have with it are that there is no apparently way (although I am sure there is of course some way via registry editing) to change the application display order, promote more frequently used applications or pin what you like.

While Microsoft’s and perhaps HTC’s default applications also have some very nice high quality icons, others by third parties look very messy. It would be great to finally be allowed to easily manage the start menu, I would also then be able to hide that nested, useless old Vodafone pay-for-information button.

Miri has actually removed some of the default shortcuts such as the link to the Marketplace, but as they are not yet functioning it really isn’t such a big deal.

The lock screen has also had a nice update and features a similar style to the Iphone (I believe) where to unlock you must drag an icon to one side or the other. It also allows you to answer the phone. Many people prefer HTC’s implementation of the dialler but sadly we don’t yet have access to a version that is compatible with this lock screen.

Pocketnow have actually posted a video of both the home screen and start menu in action:

What they don’t seem to demonstrate is that you can move both the bar on the home screen or the background to select options, threw me for a second there but it is quite nice. Tapping a menu option actually highlights it. The video does however show the lock screen, which saves me doing it as I really don’t like or want to create my own shaky cam footage! The author of the video is using the same ROM I have been testing.

One of the applications that has made formatting my device so frequently or at least being prepared to, has been Microsoft’s My Phone service which I was fortunate enough to get into the beta of, but I believe it is now an open beta. You can check it out over at http://myphone.microsoft.com . The service allows 200 megabytes of online storage for text messages, calendar, videos, music, pictures and contacts. Generally the latter is dealt with by synchronising with Outlook but an online backup is a very nice, well, backup.

200 megabytes certainly doesn’t seem like much, but it has been more than enough to meet my needs. Previously I had been using the horrible Jeyo Mobile Extender. The application served its purpose – getting my SMS from my phone to Outlook and back if needed, but it caused so many issues with my Outlook (nagging registration every time I connected my device even though I had paid for it) which often resulted in me having to kill the process. An unexpected benefit included the threading of some really old text messages, from my old device prior to 6.1, that were previously unthreaded so ‘My Phone’ also tidied up my SMS – sweet!

Windows Mobile 6.5 also comes with a new version of Internet Explorer 6 but honestly I cannot say I am a fan of what there is right now. The Touch HD stock ROM also comes with the far superior Opera 9.5 and while the new Internet Explorer could be considered as progress it is frankly too little too late.

Fully zooming out as shown in the screenshot doesn’t seem to be fully out at all and I have to sideway scroll and while I believe I have coded OSNN.net to every compliance I can think of there seems to be issues in rendering the actual news articles.

The saving grace is that I can tell Internet Explorer to be a mobile browser rather than a desktop one, so if I actually want a mobile site to render as if it were a mobile site I will use Internet Explorer, otherwise I am going to be using Opera for the foreseeable future!

The new Internet Explorer does allow for the use of Widgets however, these run in a rebranded minimalistic (or more so) version of Internet Explorer and I am looking forward to seeing more of these crop up. At this time, the ROM seems to have two different ones for weather and money. Both of these where actually part of Manilla, HTCs default home screen, in 6.1 but I guess they do make for the most interesting widgets.

Talking of Manilla, Miri’s version of the ROM does have it included although it is unknown at this time whether HTC will continue with it as it effectively replaces the new Microsoft homescreen. We shall have to wait and see. The good people of www.xda-developers.com will both back port it and maintain it though should it be necessary but for the most part the latest versions are already up and running.

Newer Windows Mobile 6.1 devices do seem to include newer HTC applications and the beauty of cooked ROMs by ‘chefs’ such as Miri tend to include more recent versions of HTCs own applications than the official releases themselves – the screenshot shows a version of Manilla, with tabs I did not previously have, running on my HTC Touch HD.

Well I hope you have enjoyed this brief look at Windows Mobile 6.5, I would definitely encourage you to take a look at a cooked ROM in the various XDA-developer sections should your device support it. However remember that flashes Windows Mobile devices means a full wipe so any data on the phone itself will be lost. Not only that but you may also find you will need to flash to an unofficial SPL (boot loader) or radio so make sure you fully read the sticky threads of your chosen forum section.

I am a little unhappy at the formatting vBulletin blog came out with for this piece so I have attached the original Word 2007 document I wrote it in for your viewing pleasure!

If linux wasnt free i would have a pc sat in the corner gathering dust, instead its running Gentoo Linux with xfce4 (who needs the bloat of gnome/kde ;))

If only freebsd and the like supported my tv card i would be a bsd user, or maybe after what i have been hearing an opensolaris user :)
